Medical Conditions
Leukemia
Leukemia is a cancer of cells in the bone marrow and blood. These malignant cells proliferate and accumulate in the blood and withinorgans of the body, crowding out and interfering with the normal functions of blood cells. There are four categories of leukemia; myelogenous, lympocytic, acute and chronic. Myelogenous and lympocytic are the types of blood cells and explain which type of blood cell is malignant. Acute orchronic, refer to the forms of the disease. These two categories characterize the type and behavior of the cancer. Lymphocytic leukemias arise from cells in the bone marrow that normally produce lymphocytes. Myelogenous or myeloid leukemias arise from cells in the bone marrow that normally give rise to red cells, some types of white cells, and platelets.
